Please note there was a calendar change. The Parent/Teacher conferences are changed to November 1st, as the original date of October 11th conflicted with the 7/8 class going to Camp Kieve. Also, please note that these will be student-led conferences. Your child will be sharing progress that they are making with you. It will be a great discussion about their learning!
Math – Mrs Tapley
5th grade mathematicians learned about exponential powers of 10, and then extended that by converting within the metric system. They focused on millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers. They also practiced their writing of decimals to the thousandths place using standard form, word form, and expanded form. 6th grade mathematicians continued their work with ratios and solved ratio problems using a visual model called tape diagrams. They also learned about the concept of the value of the ratio and completed an assessment on what they have learned so far.
Super Studies – Mrs. Bebell
This week, our 5th and 6th grade historians explored what it meant to be a patriot, loyalist, or neutralist during the American Revolution. They learned about some key figures in the story of the Revolution, and enjoyed some role-playing activities where they did a wonderful job trying to understand the perspective of people during that time. On Friday, some students were excited about the Global Climate Strike and wanted to be involved. Since we are a small group and don’t have much of an audience, students decided to expand their voice by using social media and made memes about climate change that you can see on the school’s Facebook page.
English/Language Arts – Mrs. Thoner
Students have continued working on a close reading of Chains, by Laura Halse Anderson. We have focused a lot of time on “point of view” and how a story might be different if it were told by someone else in the text. Students are working on citing passages within the text to respond to written questions in a more thorough manner.
Art – Mr. Kennerk
The class has been drawing Classical Greek shields and rosettes with the compass. We examined that a circle can be divided equally into six by its own radius, and we recognized that the daffodils, honeycombs, and crystals embrace the natural process of six. We have also done a wet-on-wet watercolor piece. This week it will become a sunset sky to a silhouette that we will paint in black acrylic to accompany their ELA reader, Chains.
