3-8 ELA

Welcome to Mrs. Thoner’s Room!

Mrs. Thoner was born in Idaho and raised in Maryland. She graduated from Brigham Young University in 1974 with a major in English and a minor in Math and a dual 7-12 teaching certificate. Mrs. Thoner’s first teaching job was at Hampstead Jr. High in inner-city Baltimore. She met her soon to be husband in October of that year (1974) and they were married in March.

Mrs. Thoner took the next 13 years substitute teaching off and on, but primarily raising their three sons until the youngest started school full days. In 1987 she started working at Homestead Project in Ellsworth (now Kid’s Peace) as a full-time substitute. In 1989 she began taking courses to certify as a special education teacher, and in 1991 she began teaching at Brooklin School.

In 2000, Mrs. Thoner received her master’s degree in special education and started an educational consulting business in addition to teaching full time. Subsequently, Mrs. Thoner has also become fully certified as a K-8 regular education teacher.

Her primary hobby is teaching people of all ages, and helping them navigate the public school system.

“ I know you think you understand what you thought I said but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant” ― Alan Greenspan
