English/Language Arts – Mrs. Thoner
We worked on a close reading of Chains in which we really looked Isabel’s difficulties. She thought she would be freed by the will that had been written by her owner, however, Mr. Robert has decided not to wait for any paperwork and to sell Isabel and her sister, Ruth to a new owner. Isabell has a flashback to when her family was torn apart during the auction and her father beaten. We are specifically working on citing the text to demonstrate understanding. This will continue this week, looking at Chapters 4 – 8; but we are also investigating key vocabulary and beginning a spy unit around the Revolutionary War. Please be sensitive to any discomfort your child may have to the text, and alert me if there is a problem.
Math – Mrs. Tapley
The 5th grade mathematicians built their understanding of place value to the thousandths place. They deepened their understanding of our base 10 system, and improved their skills of reading and writing both very large numbers and very small numbers. Our 6th grade mathematicians explored equivalent ratios and learned about a strategy of displaying ratios with tape diagrams. Students also completed their NWEA assessment this week, which will allow us to see how much they grow in their math skills during the school year.
Super Studies – Mrs. Bebell
The 5/6 students have been working in small groups, diligently reading and discussing different events leading up to the American Revolution. As a class, we also read Independent Dames: What You Never Knew About the Women and Girls of the American Revolution by Laurie Halse Anderson and have started reading George vs. George: The American Revolution As Seen from Both Sides by Rosalyn Schanzer.
