Message from Ms. Porter, School Counselor
Hello families! I am the new School Counselor at Brooklin School, and I am really looking forward to getting to know ALL of your kids. Every Monday, I will be teaching Social-Emotional learning in grades K-8. These will be fun classes that will focus on building skills around emotional regulation, social skills, study habits, organization, self-esteem, and goal setting. On Wednesday and Friday afternoons I will be back at school to meet with kids one-on-one and to run small groups on an as-needed basis. My office is just inside the side door near the playground (the old teacher’s lounge). It’s a cozy, comfy place where kids – and parents – are always welcome!
A quick word about me: I am a certified School Counselor with a Masters in Education, a Masters in School Counseling and BA in History. I have 16 years of experience as an elementary school teacher in grades k-8 and I live here in Brooklin. My 3 kids are grown, and my husband, Sam, works at Brooklin Boatyard. During COVID I made the decision to pivot out of general education and into school counseling. I am SO happy to be back in the classroom after a hiatus of a few years for grad school. I really missed teaching!
Part of my job is consulting and collaborating with teachers and with parents. If you have a concern about your child, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me: aporter@brooklinschool.org School counselors typically provide short-term, solution-based counseling. I love seeing kids weekly for quick check-ins, or to problem-solve a specific issue.I try to connect with as many kids as possible in a given week, keeping an eye on the emotional health of the whole school. Of course, if it seems that a child would be better served by long-term counseling outside of school, I will reach out to you.
If you are in school on a Mon, Wed or Fri, I’d love to meet you – pop your head in my office and say hello!
