• March 9th is the SOUP, CHILI, CHOWDER CHALLENGE.  Start practicing now.

• There are still so many great warm clothes in the front hall for the warm clothes drive. Give what you can, take what you need.

 

• We are getting ready to place another order of Yellow Brooklin School T-Shirts. Youth sizes XS-L and Adult sizes S-XXXXL. You can also have it in ladies cut. They will be $10 for students and Staff members, and $15 for anyone else. If you would like to place an order please let Louanne know, and get her a check by Feb 8th.

 

8th Grade Fundraiser-Six Course Chinese Dinner

On February 12th, 2019, we are having two seatings, one at  5pm and the other at 7pm. The cost is $30 per person / $100 for table of four. The Menu: Appetizer Platter-Red Curry Coconut Soup, Sesame Beef, Mopo Tofu and Triple Seafood w/veggies served with steamed rice and dessert. Non-Alcoholic beverages will be served.

Meal Preparation will be coordinated by Jeff and Maribeth Carson and table service by our 8th-grade students in the school cafeteria. Seating is limited to 24 per seating so please get your friends together and make your reservation soon. Message  jbaird@brooklinschool.org to make a reservation.

Library News

Thank You for the Chris Van Dusen Visit

There are so many people to thank for their help in making our recent author/illustrator visit with Chris Van Dusen a big success.  Many, many thanks to the Brooklin PTF for funding the visit. Thanks too to PTF members Molly Blake, Brittany Carter, and all those who contributed to the luncheon for staff and Mr. Van Dusen and to Blue Hill Books for providing his books to be sold and personally autographed.  Our art teacher, Sarah Doremus worked with many classes to create a welcome sign (hanging in the library) made of student drawn cars inspired by our guest’s book If I Built a Car. It is a big hit and many thanks to her and the students for making it happen. And thanks to our principal, Jil Blake, students and staff who carried out the plan when I was unable to be here.

All grades had been reading his books and studying his illustrations during their scheduled library time for over a month and were ready to meet him in person.

• Thanks to all the parents and families who responded to my plea in last week’s newsletter to help their children keep track of school library books and to return them on time so others could read them and library habits for the future are learned.

A word from our Librarian

• An important purpose of the library is to make good books available for children to take home to share with their parents or, in the case of older students, to read for information or fun. It is an established fact that younger children who read with their families at home tend to learn to read earlier and remain readers than those who don’t. Their vocabularies are also positively impacted by reading with someone at home so it’s a win/win experience.

• Older students also need good reading role models and a bit of help reminding them to read often and return books on time.  Returning books to book bags after reading at home seems to be a good practice for keeping track of books and returning them on time. Keeping all library books in one place in the home is another idea.

• To help families know when classes have scheduled library time for returning and getting a new book, I’m including the following. There is also a procedure for returning library books in the book drop and signing out new books when I am not here:

Kindergarten and grades 5/6 – Wednesdays

Pre-school, pre-K and grades 1/2 – Thursdays

Grades 3/4 and 7/8- Fridays

Health Reminders

What can I do to protect myself against the flu and colds?

*Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

*Stay home from work, school or doing errands when you are sick.  You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

*Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing.

*Wash your hands often.

*Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.  Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

*Eat a healthy diet.

Deadline for the Young Composers Competition Approaches

Calling all Maine students high school age and younger who love to write original music. Students can win prize money for their creative efforts, $200 for first place, $125 for second place, and $75 for third place. Three winners will be chosen in Category I (13 years old and younger) and three winners in Category II (14-18 years old). The deadline for sending an original music composition to the Bagaduce Music Lending Library is February 8, 2019, just 3 weeks away. New this year—Mark Tipton, a judge and composer, will offer a Composition Workshop for older students at the Festival on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 1:00 PM. Details about the competition, guidelines, and entry forms are available on the Bagaduce Music website, www.bagaducemusic.org. FMI: 207-374-5454.

Artist Carlos Nieto III will teach you how to create and modify an anime character from

scratch, using simple shapes and easy to understand instructions. Anime Your Way draws

from art, history, reading, geometry, and creative writing! All materials are included. No

drawing experience necessary. Ages 8 and up.

materials and books for inspiration. This event is free and for kids of all ages.

Learn about how to track animals through a fun scavenger hunt, and make your own animal
